Month 19, August 2006

Lily's vocabulary exploded this month! Last month she could say about 20 words, and now she knows over a hundred, and uses them a lot. Although this rapid language development probably happens to all kids, most of them don't have obsessive fathers to keep track of all the words. But Lily does! Here they are:

You may notice a dirty word in there. Let the record show that she learned it from Mommy, not Daddy!! The names include her friends at day care as well as TV characters we watch. It took us a while to figure out that one of the words she uses most, "fi", means "pacifier". There are a couple other words she says that I still haven't figured out their meaning. Last weekend I was folding laundry with Lily in the room, and she started saying "han", "han", and pointing at the closet. I didn't understand her, but I went to the closet to get hangers, and then realized: "hangers!"

We took Lily to the Children's Museum again. Here we're teaching her how to fish. Pop Blackwell will be proud!

On our last visit she wasn't quite brave enough to crawl all the way through the tube at the museum, but this time she went through it several times. She even went in a tube that you can't see the exit from when you enter. I was more upset by that than she was!

The slide at the museum is bigger than her one at home, and she had no trouble climbing up it and sliding down, so we may need to upgrade her home slide.

Lily likes playing with stickers, and put these ones from her playroom wall on her arm.

She likes playing with the CD player, but spends most of her time putting CDs in and taking them back out, rather than listening to music.

She started carrying Elmo around this month and hugging him. When I'm playing with her she tells me to get "my" Elmo (the bigger one), and for some reason she wants us both to have a pillow, so we walk around for a while carrying Elmos and pillows. (We won the Elmos at Busch Gardens last month.)

She also carries Homer or Maggie around sometimes. That's my girl! I'll raise her to be a Simpsons fan. (I hope Social Services doesn't read this.)

Lily sees Maggie's pacifier and keeps trying to take it. In the third picture she is desperate and sucks the outside part of it.

We got her a Sit & Spin, which (unlike the ones we remember) plays music when you turn around on it.

Here are several outfits she wore this month. She loves the red tennis shoes in the third picture.

Lily also loves the sandals in this outfit. The girl has a serious shoe obsession!

She often likes crawling into her rocket ship, and wants me to come inside too if I'm nearby. The little black things she's playing with are magnets we bought her at Busch Gardens (second and third pictures), and they're pretty strong. She calls them "rocks". I like playing with them too! In the last picture she wants me to give her the camera.

Here's Lily relaxing on her easy chair, watching cartoons.

She's giving "mirror-Lily" a kiss! Lily LOVES looking in the mirror. Vanity, thy name is Lily!

This is Lily's first time wearing pigtails!

Wow, look at all those words my brilliant daughter can spell, and she associates them with the right animals! All right, we faked it...

This is just a random cute photo. She walked over to me on the couch and wanted me to play with her.

Here's an MPEG video of her saying several body-part words. It's a big file, 54 MB. Click the picture to watch it, or download it here.
